As dangerous wildfire conditions continue across South Georgia, Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) is deploying personnel and apparatus to assist with suppression efforts in Brantley County and other impacted areas.
Governor Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency for 91 Georgia counties following multiple active wildfires, severe drought conditions, and rapidly increasing fire danger across the state. According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, more than 90 wildfires have been reported since April 18. The State of Emergency is effective immediately and will remain in place through May 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m., unless renewed.
Among the largest incidents is the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County, which has burned more than 5,000 acres and remains only partially contained. The Pineland Road Fire in Clinch and Echols Counties has also burned more than 16,000 acres.
Officials report that dry weather, gusty winds, low humidity, and debris left behind from Hurricane Helene have created ideal conditions for fires to spread quickly.
In response, the Georgia Forestry Commission has issued a 30-day outdoor burn ban in affected counties. The Governor’s executive order also mobilizes state resources and authorizes additional support to wildfire response operations.
Chatham County Fire is proud to answer the call by sending trained personnel and assets to support firefighters working around the clock to protect lives, homes, businesses, and natural resources. Six members of CCFD include, Captains Jonathan Campbell and Jaden Jackson, firefighters Mackenzie Jackson, James Loflin, Jonathan Huber and Malik Norman.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert to wildfire conditions, follow burn bans, and monitor local officials for updates.
Please keep all responding firefighters, emergency personnel, and impacted residents in your thoughts and prayers.
