Chatham County Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Mayers, has earned the prestigious Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) credential from the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM).

Mayers was approved by the IAEM Certification Commission during its June 2026 review meeting. The AEM is the second-highest professional credential offered by IAEM, an organization representing more than 6,000 emergency management professionals dedicated to saving lives and protecting property and the environment during emergencies and disasters. The designation is currently held by just 435 professionals.

To earn the credential, Mayers completed an extensive certification process that included professional references, emergency and general management training, documentation of professional achievements, and a written examination. AEM® recipients must also complete additional training and demonstrate continued professional contributions every five years to maintain certification.

IAEM's certification program was developed with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and has recognized more than 4,730 emergency managers since 1993.
