Chatham County Fire Department Responds to a Two-Alarm Fatal Structure Fire on Runaway Point Rd.

Chatham County, GA (May 6, 2026) At approximately 11:01 p.m., Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Chatham County Fire Department (CCFD) responded to a reported structure fire with possible entrapment in the 100 block of Runaway Point Road. District Chief 301, Battalion Chief 302, Engine 304, Engine 314, Safety 301, Squad 302, Squad 308 and Truck 302 responded.

First-arriving units, with an approximate two-minute response time, encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from the rear of the residence. Battalion Chief 302 established command and immediately requested a second alarm to support firefighting and search operations.

Firefighters conducted a primary search of the structure and located one occupant, who was removed from the residence. Despite prompt life-saving efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.

Crews initiated an aggressive fire attack while search operations were underway. The fire was brought under control at approximately 11:33 p.m. Firefighters remained on scene to conduct overhaul operations and ensure all hazards were mitigated. No firefighter injuries were reported.

Six occupants, five adults and one child were displaced as a result of the fire. The Red Cross has been notified to assist those affected. During the incident, two pets were able to escape the home; however, one pet did not survive.

The cause of the fire is currently under a joint investigation by the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office, Chatham County Fire Department, and Chatham County Police Department.

No further information will be released at this time.
